INTRODUCING A GLOBAL SCORE
TO HELP YOU CHOOSE MORE EASILY

To guide you in your choices, we have developed a global environmental impact score. This considers 14 factors of impact on our planet which are evaluated at every step of the product life cycle. Recognized by the scientific community, each of these factors make it possible for us to establish a clear profile for each of our products.

To develop this evaluation method, our teams worked hand-in-hand with 11 independent scientific experts. We’ve also aligned this method with the “European Product Environmental Footprint” guidelines.

Moreover, to ensure that our method is realistic and that our data is precise, it has been verified by Bureau Veritas, an independent auditor.

WHERE CAN YOU FIND THE
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT SCORE?

It’s easy: the environmental impact score of each product is displayed on the website, on each product sheet, beneath the ingredient list. That is also where you can find more detailed information about each product, such as its manufacturing conditions, packaging, and social contribution.

To make the score even clearer, we have decided to highlight the carbon footprint and water footprint of each product. Why? Because those two data points represent two-thirds of the global environmental impact of each cosmetic product evaluated according to this index. Now you can get an idea of the product’s footprint, at a glance!

WHAT IS CARBON FOOTPRINT?

The carbon footprint of a product represents the quantity of greenhouse gas (CO2) emitted throughout the product’s life cycle – particularly during the production processes of the ingredients and packaging, its manufacturing process, transport, usage, and finally the recycling of its packaging.

WHAT IS WATER FOOTPRINT?

This evaluation represents the water consumed throughout the product’s life cycle. It takes into account the manufacturing of the ingredients and packaging, the water required to produce the product at the factory, the water consumed during usage (shower, etc.), and the water required to treat the resulting waste water.

HOW TO INTERPRET
THESE SCORES?

We’ve decided to make an intuitive score. Each product is rated from A to E, and each letter is associated with a color ranging from dark green for the most virtuous products to dark orange for those that leave room for improvement.

The products are classified in comparison to other L’Oréal products of the same category. For example, each face cream is compared with more than 1,400 other face creams produced by L’Oréal. Creams ranked “A” have the most favorable profile, while those ranked “E” offer opportunities for us to further improve our practices.

WE ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS

WHAT IS A RESPONSIBLE FACTORY?

It is a factory that continues, year after year, to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions (in equivalent CO2 emissions), water consumption, and waste output. Such a factory also contributes to the development of jobs in the local community – particularly for people in difficult situations – and provides its employees with access to training.

WHAT IS FSC OR PEFC CERTIFICATION?

These certifications ensure that the paper or cardboard that we use is taken from sustainably managed forests in order to respect the environment, biodiversity, and human rights. That is the case of all our packages (including leaflets and boxes). This packaging is independently certified in conditions determined either by the Forest Stewardship Council™ (FSC™) or by the Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC).

WHAT IS A RECYCLED MATERIAL?

It is a material made from other materials which are recycled.
