How can you prevent eczema?

Trying to prevent eczema is all about avoiding any possible triggers which might be your link to eczema.

Each person has a different reason for their eczema to flare up so the only way to avoid it is to take care to avoid the allergens you react badly to and to keep a good skincare routine going.

Eczema specialist Dr Carla Stanton (www.drcarlastanton.com) gives her top 3 tips on how to help keep eczema at bay.

1) Reduce your stress levels

β€œWhat triggers eczema?” Easier said than done, but since eczema is closely linked to stress (our immune systems are regulated by stress hormones) it’s best to remain zen at all times!

Physical activity is one of the best ways to significantly reduce stress levels. Even gentle exercise such as yoga, pilates or walking, can help to boost the hormone serotonin, aka the β€œhappy hormone”. Meditation is also a great way to reduce your stress: just 10 minutes per day can improve your mood.

2) Be consistent in your skincare routine

Taking good care of your skin is essential! Don’t wait until a flare-up to treat your skin. Instead - look after it consistently day after day by crafting a daily routine with skincare products suitable for eczema-prone skin. Keeping skin healthy and nourished means avoiding eczema and dryness.
Moisturising twice a day really helps, especially in the 5 minutes after a shower when skin is at its most absorbent. Dr Carla Stanton says β€œan adult with eczema should use at least 500g [of lotion or balm] per week, and half that for a child.

β€œHow to help eczema?” When it comes to your skincare routine we recommend Lipikar Baume AP+M, a soothing body balm that perfectly caters for the needs of dry, itchy skin suffering with eczema flare-ups. Tested on sensitive skin, this gentle moisturizer provides long-lasting skin hydration and features a triple action formula, with an anti-scratching and anti-relapse efficacy; it also nourishes and strengthens the skin barriers.

Beyond targeting dry patches on skin, painful sensations and skin inflammation, this body balm is particularly effective when combined with Lipikar Syndet AP+, a soap-free body cleanser that replenishes and soothes eczema skin. This moisturizing body wash is made for sensitive skin prone to scratching and itching and is a perfect addition to your daily skin regimen.

For on-the-go relief, Lipikar AP+ Stick is a travel-size anti-irritation solution that gives you the freedom of soothing your skin any time and anywhere.

3) Be well rested

Did you know that we spend approximately 1/3 of our lives asleep? Sleep is restorative and key to healing and repairing our body for the next day, and that includes skin damage, too! Therefore, getting regular, quality sleep is vital.
