Trying to prevent eczema is all about avoiding any possible triggers which might be your link to eczema.
Each person has a different reason for their eczema to flare up so the only way to avoid it is to take care to avoid the allergens you react badly to and to keep a good skincare routine going.
Eczema specialist Dr Carla Stanton (www.drcarlastanton.com) gives her top 3 tips on how to help keep eczema at bay.
1) Reduce your stress levels
Easier said than done, but since eczema is closely linked to stress (our immune systems are regulated by stress hormones) it’s best to remain zen at all times!
Physical activity is one of the best ways to significantly reduce stress levels. Even gentle exercise such as yoga, pilates or walking, help to boost the hormone serotonin, aka the “happy hormone”. Meditation is also a great way to reduce your stress. Just 10 minutes per day can improve your mood.
2) Be consistent in your skincare routine
Taking good care of your skin is essential! Don’t wait until a flare-up to treat your skin. Instead - look after it consistently day after day. It needs to be an all-year-round thing. Keeping skin healthy and nourished means avoiding eczema and dryness. Moisturising twice a day really helps, especially in the 5 minutes after a shower when skin is at its most absorbent. Dr Carla Stanton says “an adult with eczema should use at least 500g [of lotion or balm] per week, and half that for a child.
3) Be well rested
Did you know that we spend approximately 1/3 of our lives asleep? Sleep is restorative and key to healing and repairing our body for the next day, and that includes skin damage, too! Therefore, getting regular, quality sleep is vital.
